Installing on a domain controller

This document details why you can't install TOTAL onto a domain controller.

This document only applies to server installations. Standalone installations can be installed on a domain controller without issue.

When installing TOTAL on a Server, one of the required components is Microsoft SQL Server 2008. There are no restrictions on which server environment TOTAL is installed, as long as the system requirements are met. However, there is one exception: installing on a server that is a domain controller. This document explains why.

Since SQL 2008 is a required installation, we don't support installing it on a domain controller. This is because it isn't recommended by Microsoft due to issues with security and performance. Additionally, there are extra steps required to get the installation to work, which would require extensive workarounds to complete. Even if you're successful with the initial installation, you can still experience problems running TOTAL — unexpected shut downs, data loss, software not starting, etc.

If you're using your server as a domain controller and want to use a server installation of TOTAL, contact your network technician to help with alternative network setups. Don't try to force the server install. If something goes wrong, we're unable to assist with any troubleshooting, and Microsoft might deny support for your Windows server install if SQL Server is installed.

Alternative Network Setups

If you're unfamiliar with configuring a network, consult with a local technician before attempting either of the alternative setups listed below. Only an experienced technician can determine what setup is best for you. a la mode technologies, llc. is not responsible for any loss of data that might occur by following these directions. Be sure any critical reports or data are backed up before beginning.

Option 1: Install a virtual machine such as Hyper-V or VM-ware on the server.

  • Pros:
    • A virtual machine resides on the same drive as the server.
    • Reports and databases reside on the same drive as the server.
    • TOTAL setup is the same as a normal server installation.
    • If the virtual machine errors or crashes, it doesn't affect the actual server.
  • Cons:
    • Setup may be expensive if you don't already have a license.
    • Setup for a virtual machine can be difficult if you're unfamiliar with the process.

Option 2: Install TOTAL to another machine in the server network.

  • Pros:
    • Requires no additional hardware or licenses.
    • Reports and images can be saved to the server.
    • Generally less expensive to set up than a virtual machine.
  • Cons:
    • More complex setup for installation.
    • If the host machine crashes or is turned off, TOTAL will not work.
    • The databases and settings can't be stored on a different computer.
