Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 file locations for TOTAL

Whether you're moving TOTAL to or from a computer running Windows 7, Windows 8.1, or Windows 10 you'll need to know where those files should be located. This document will show the locations for your files in Windows 7, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10.

In Windows 7 there are three folders that you'll need to copy to or from when moving TOTAL. These locations vary slightly, depending on whether you are using a network or standalone installation of TOTAL.

To move your installation of TOTAL to a new computer, you'll first install TOTAL on the new machine. Once TOTAL is installed, move your data from the old installation to the new one based on the default locations below. You can use a network or removable media to move your data.

Each of the folders you'll be moving has a similar name (a la mode) but is in a different location. For that reason, we recommend that you create 3 folders on your removable media so you can keep track:

  • My Reports
  • Public Reports
  • User Settings

Then, copy and paste the three folders below into the folder that you've created on your removable media, according to their original locations.

For standalone installations:
My Reports — These reports are located in:
C:\Users\[username]\Documents\a la mode\
Note that [username] will be replaced by the Windows username.
Public Reports — These reports are located in:
C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\a la mode\
User Settings — Includes QuickLists, import templates, and more — located in:
C:\ProgramData\alamode\WINTOTAL
For network installations:
My Reports — These reports are located in:
C:\Users\[username]\Documents\a la mode\
Note that [username] will be replaced by the Windows username.
Public Reports — These reports are located in:
C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\a la mode\
User Settings — Includes QuickLists, import templates, and more — located in:
C:\Users\Public\Documents\a la mode\WINTOTAL
The paths listed above are the default locations to the specified folders for the original installation. If you installed TOTAL on a separate hard drive, or if you are transferring data from backup or from an external hard drive, the paths will begin with a drive letter other than C:\.

If you're moving to a new, unused installation of TOTAL, you can simply copy/paste the entire a la mode folder listed above, overwriting the original folder created during installation.

If you're moving to an existing installation of TOTAL that already has reports in its folders, you will want to copy/paste the a la mode folder into a location outside of your existing reports, then make that folder an attached directory in TOTAL. Click here to find out how.
