Configuring your security software

This document provides a list of a la mode system files to add to the exceptions in your security software when configuring your antivirus or firewall program.

When your security tools are left with their default settings, they can cause errors and slow‑downs in programs that frequently connect to the Internet. There are a number of ways these problems can manifest themselves. Most commonly, a program might lock up when trying to pull a map, fail to download updates, or generate error messages. You can avoid this by configuring your antivirus program to allow access for specific applications.

There are actually several smaller programs within each a la mode application that require access to the web. Simply choose the product you need to configure, then add the file paths listed below to your security software exception list.

Please select your software using the drop‑down menu before choosing a method.

NOTE: Our technicians are unable to assist with the specifics of configuring security software, or offer recommendations regarding which application to use. If you need assistance with any part of the configuration process, contact a local technician or the application's manufacturer for additional help.

What's a firewall?

With the frequency of computer viruses, spyware, adware, and phishing attacks on the Internet, there's an ever‑increasing need for software to protect your computer from potential risks. A firewall is a program designed to do just that, by filtering out threats before they ever reach your machine. Generally, they come with antivirus software, as well as all modern versions of Windows operating systems. While they are intended to protect you from a variety of potential threats, firewalls can also inadvertently cause other programs on your computer to malfunction. This is largely because they have no way of knowing whether a program poses a threat without some input on your part, and may still misjudge a few pieces of your a la mode software, causing any number of issues during use.

What problems can occur when running antivirus software or firewalls?

While not all users encounter problems when running antivirus or firewall protection, some have reported issues similar to the ones below that were corrected by disabling the security software:

  • System is generally slow
  • Downloading and installing updates fail
  • Errors appear when doing anything requiring an Internet connection
  • Login credentials are invalid or cannot be verified

These problems can be difficult to diagnose, because there isn't always an error message to indicate an issue is related to your security software. Security software scans each file as it's accessed and modified, and multiple security programs running at once can exponentially increase performance problems.

Can I stop my firewall from interfering with my a la mode programs?

Yes. To test whether your firewall is interfering with your a la mode software, simply disable it momentarily and attempt to work in your affected program again. If the issue seems resolved, it's likely a problem associated with your firewall.

This is a short term solution, and leaves you open to a variety of security threats. To ensure that your firewall does not block TOTAL and a la mode products, ports 80 and 443 will need to be open. Contact your firewall provider for detailed instructions on whitelisting the programs you use.

Allowing access for

When a program tries to access a website through your firewall, it typically prompts you to allow or deny access. If you choose to deny it — whether on purpose or by mistake — then your firewall will continue to block this process every time in the future. To avoid this, you'll need to unblock previously blocked files and grant them full access. Then, add and permit all of the following applications through your firewall. (This process varies from one antivirus program to the next, some require just folder exceptions while others require individual file exceptions.)

If your a la mode software is not installed to the default location, you need to account for that when browsing to each of these files. If you're not sure where your software is installed, open the program, click Help on the upper left, and select About to view the location of the program.

NOTE:  The paths listed are the default folder/file locations on a 64‑bit computer. If you're using a 32‑bit machine, the paths are located under "C:\Program Files". Not sure whether your computer is 32‑bit or 64‑bit? Click here.
NOTE:  New files are added from a la mode from time to time. If you get a popup from your antivirus or firewall that mentions a la mode, click Allow.

Preventing your Firewall from blocking a la mode websites

Another side effect to using antivirus software is the inability to work with particular websites. Often, there's no error message, and the website may simply appear broken. Make sure each of the following sites is configured in your software as a "trusted site" and is fully permitted through your firewall.

Web Services

  • alamode.com
  • AppraiserXSites.com
  • InterFlood.com
  • maps.googleapis.com
  • XSitesNetwork.com

Titan Suite

  • alamode.com
  • titanappraisal.com
  • titanoffice.alamode.com
  • titananalytics.alamode.com
  • titanmaps.alamode.com
  • entry.gofnc.com/outreach
  • fncconnect.com

That's it!  After configuring your antivirus software to allow a la mode applications permission to the web, you should no longer experience sites being blocked by your security software.

Allowing access for Titan products

Unlike TOTAL, our Titan products are completely web‑based. To make sure you have full access to Titan, verify that each of the following sites is configured in your software as a "trusted site" and is fully permitted through your firewall.

  • alamode.com
  • titanappraisal.com
  • titanoffice.alamode.com
