Errors Creating PDFs

Fixing errors when creating PDFs

To troubleshoot effectively, you'll need to first determine if the problem is the printer driver or the photos in your report.  A simple way to test this is to try printing just a major appraisal form, like the 2055 or URAR.

  • Start a new report and only add one form, like a 2055 or URAR.
  • Once the report is open, click on File and select Print to PDF.

If the form prints without error, then it's probably an issue with the images in your appraisal.  This means you'll need to use the WinTOTAL Image Optimizer to optimize the photos in the original report.  If this is the case, check out the section on "Optimizing Photos for Easier PDF Creation."

If you're unable to print the blank appraisal form, then it's likely an issue with the PDF driver.  If this is the case, skip to the section on "Reinstalling the PDF Driver".

Optimizing Photos for Easier PDF Creation

If you can create PDFs from other reports, especially ones with fewer photos, it's possible you just need to run our image optimizer and rescale your photos.  For electronic delivery, you really don't need high resolution photos.  Optimizing the images also makes it easier and faster for your clients to download your appraisal.

  1. Open the report for which you can't create a PDF.
  2. Go to the Images PowerView.
  3. Click a photo page from the list on the left side of the screen.  When the page loads, you should see the photos on that page appear on the right.

  4. Double-click any of the images on the right to launch the Image Optimizer.
  5. If your report has multiple photos, click the button at the lower-left labeled Show All Report Images.  This will show a scrollable panel at the bottom that displays all the images in your report.  That way, you can load each image into the optimization utility by clicking it in the list.

  6. As you click each image to load it into the main Image Optimizer window, you may get a message regarding flattening your graphic and annotations, so you can click Yes.
  7. When you see the image preview in the optimizer, it will already be optimized for you by default.  You can tell that the image has been optimized because the current size is smaller than the original size.  In most cases, you can accept this optimization without any changes and skip to step 9.

    Automatic optimizations

  8. If you'd like to try a different optimization, you can make changes to the settings on the Optimize tab.  Here's what the settings will do:
    • Step #1 — Set pixels per inch: This setting will change the resolution (the number of "dots" per inch) of the image.  A lower number will decrease both the dimensions and the file size of the image.
    • Step #2 — Set image detail: This setting changes the quality of the image, sometimes known as compression.  A lower quality will reduce the file size while reducing the visibility of image details.
    • Step #3 — Set colors: This setting will have the smallest effect on file size.  You'll probably find that you rarely need to change the colors of the image, but you're welcome to try it out.

  9. Do nothing to sketch pages or location maps created using WinTOTAL or one of our integrated applications.  These files use a different format and do not need to be optimized.
  10. Once you've optimized all the photos, click Finish then try printing again.  If you're still unsuccessful, go back and make sure you optimized each photo and try again before calling tech support or going further in this document.

There Might be a Problem with your Digital Signature

It's possible that the problem may not be your images or scanned photos, but rather your digital signature.  So the question here is: "Can you create a PDF successfully when the report isn't signed?"  If creating a PDF only fails when a report is signed, here's how to optimize your digital signature:

  1. Open a report in WinTOTAL, click Help and select About.
  2. In the screen that appears, find where it has Current User: and write down the name in parentheses.  This is your WinTOTAL user name.  Also, look for Program Directory: and write down your installation path.  This is where WinTOTAL is installed.

  3. Close the window and click Images in the toolbar at the top of the screen.
  4. When the Images PowerView appears, click Images on Disk in the Images pane shown to the lower left of the screen.
  5. At the top of this screen, WinTOTAL asks for a Path to the photos.  Click the Browse link to the left of this field.
  6. Use the Browse for Folder tool to browse to the program directory your wrote down in step 3.
  7. Once you've accessed the WinTOTAL program directory, open the Users folder and find the folder that matches the name you wrote down in step 2.  In the case of the screenshot above, the full path would be

    C:\a la mode\WinTOTAL\Users\LANCEDOC

  8. Click OK to display your digital signature in the list of photos inside that folder.
  9. Double-click your digital signature and optimize it as described in the previous section.

Your digital signature has now been optimized.  Now sign a report and attempt to print it again.

Reinstall the PDF Driver

Once again, do this only if you've never been able to create a PDF or when even a report with no photos generates an error.  The steps are as follows:

  1. First, save and close your report, and close out of WinTOTAL Completely.
  2. Press Windows key + R on your keyboard.

    Win+R

  3. Type tsa in the Open: field, and press Enter or click OK.

  4. Select WinTOTAL Utilities and click Next.
  5. Double-click 18. Reinstall PDF X-Change 3.0 in the column on the right.

If running 18. Reinstall PDF X-Change 3.0 fails to reinstall you must uninstall and reinstall it manually.  To do this:

    1. Get into the Control Panel: Press Windows key + R on your keyboard.

    2. Type appwiz.cpl in the Open: field, and press Enter or click OK.

    3. In the list of Currently installed programs, locate PDF X-Change 3.0, select it, and click Uninstall in the toolbar.  If there are additional instances of PDF X-Change listed, uninstall those as well before rebooting your computer.
    4. Once you have removed all instances of PDF X-Change 3.0, reboot your computer.
    5. When the computer finishes rebooting, get back into WinTOTAL's Tech Support Assistant: Press Windows key + R on your keyboard.

    6. Type tsa in the Open: field, and press Enter or click OK.

    7. Select WinTOTAL Utilities and click Next.
    8. Double-click 18. Reinstall PDF X-Change 3.0 in the column on the right.

At this point, WinTOTAL reinstalls the PDF X‑Change print driver.  When the hourglass and/or PDF X‑Change setup window disappears, close the Tech Support Assistant, open your report, and print it to PDF like normal.
