Implementing IDX
Document 5946
Revised 6/22/2009 JRH

IDX stands for "Internet Data Exchange". IDX is a system that allows you to link your website to data stored by your local MLS or Board of REALTORS® and make it accessible directly from within your website. This allows your prospective clients to search all the listings in the area without leaving your website.

If you have any problems or questions with IDX, contact idxsupport@alamode.com. If you have any specific questions about your IDX setup, such as what's your "IDX URL Link" or "Unique ID", please direct them to your IDX provider.

This document outlines the process of integrating listings data hosted by your local MLS or Board of REALTOR® into your Agent XSite. Since your MLS is always the source of any IDX service, these instructions will help you ask them the right questions when setting up the integration.

If you're interested in learning more about a la modes new XSites IDX product, click here, To see if your local MLS is available for this service, click here. Otherwise, proceed through this document to integrate your existing listings data with your Agent XSite.

Step By Step

In order to implement IDX on your XSite, we'll need to obtain the following information from your MLS or board.

Board/MLS information - Speak with your board and collect the following information.

  • Board/MLS name: ______________________________________________
  • Board/MLS phone number: ______________________________________
  • Board/MLS contact name: _______________________________________

Agent contact information - Enter the contact information for the agent who will be using the IDX setup.

  • Name: __________________________________________________
  • E-mail: __________________________________________________
  • Website Address: _________________________________________
  • Phone: __________________________________________________

Type of IDX link:  Framing or FTP?  (Your MLS or Board will know this.) - Ask your board what type of IDX link/ IDX service they provide. Please keep in mind that some boards may charge a fee for subscription to their IDX services.

  • My board/MLS offers a framing (Smart-Frame) IDX URL (http://...)
    The URL is:  ______________________________________________
  • My board/MLS offers a FTP (File Transfer Protocol) IDX or IDX Data Feed.
XSites does not support a FTP/Data Feed IDX link. You will need to go
through a third party vendor, such as iHomefinder.

Is an agreement required?  Often, an MLS will require a web host, such as a la mode, to sign an agreement before allowing you to put IDX information on a site.  You will need to ask your Board if they require an agreement or not.

  • If they DO NOT require an IDX agreement - Skip to the next section for additional steps to complete the IDX setup process.
  • If they DO require an IDX agreement - Obtain the agreement from your MLS and complete it with all applicable broker/agent signatures. Then, fax the entire contract including the Agent/Broker pages, the consultant/vendor pages, and answers to the question in this document to the attention of "IDX Agreements"
at 1-800-211-4512. Once we receive the agreement, we will sign it and fax it back to the agent or MLS, as directed, so that the MLS will give URL information to the agent to enter on their XSite.

Note: It can take up to ten business days before an IDX agreement is reviewed and processed. These are legal agreements and must be reviewed by our legal department. In some instances it might be the first time we've received an agreement from a particular MLS, so that can lengthen the processing time. We will notify you if the processing of an agreement will exceed this time frame.

Once you've obtained all the information from your MLS and completed the process of obtaining signatures...

  1. Log into the admin area of your XSite.
  2. Open the IDX features of your site by hovering over Listings in the top toolbar and then clicking IDX in the toolbar that drops down.

  3. Choose your State from the drop down list.
  4. Pick your Board/MLS next.  If you do not see your specific provider in the list, you have two options:
    • Contact Us - This is the most likely option for you. Just send the information about your board to us at idxsupport@alamode.com and we'll take care of the rest.

Note: Boards that are labeled as "Supported by iHomeFinder" are only available via the following option. If your board is not listed without this label, you will need to contact us with your board's information.

    • Choose an iHomeFinder Provided Solution - iHomeFinder is a 3rd party service with which you can subscribe to have listings information available on your XSite.  iHomeFinder does charge a fee for their services, but there is not extra fee from a la mode to integrate with their service. If you're board doesn't have an IDX solution or if you're looking for a better alternative than what they provide, iHomeFinder can be a great alternative.
  5. Enter the IDX provider information obtained through the process outlined at the beginning of this document.
  6. Enter the button name, page title, and your preferred method for opening the link to your IDX solution.
  7. Finally, click Save and then click XSite in the top toolbar to open the XSites Wizard.
  8. Using the navigation on the left, skip to the My Content and Organize Content steps to enable your new IDX page and arrange it amongst the other buttons on your site.
