Troubleshooting Aurora Installations

It's not uncommon for installation to be a common issue for new versions of software.  Here are typical problems and solutions for our latest Aurora edition of WinTOTAL.

During Aurora installation, some users receive a message saying, "You may need to install File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks.  Please refer to the FAQ for detail."

Aurora's new database structure runs on the Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine.  It's a lot more powerful than our old MS Access-based system and integrates with your PC more closely.  Since it's a more network optimized database system, certain network components of Windows need to be installed and enabled - even on a desktop PC.  Depending on your PC setup, these Windows components may either be blocked by Windows Firewall or not installed at all.

Let's check the most common culprit, the Microsoft Windows Firewall.  In Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) it blocks file and print sharing by default.  Here's how to allow an exception for it.

  1. Go to the machine who's hard drive is the target of the Aurora installation.  From there, click Start and go to Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel go to Windows Security Center.
  3. Once in the Windows Security Center go to Manage security settings for: and click Windows Firewall
  4. From within Windows Firewall go to the Exceptions tab.

  5. Under the Exceptions tab make sure that File and Print Sharing is checked (enabled).
  6. Now, click OK and close out Control Panel.

You should now  be able to continue with the Aurora installation.
