Reinstalling WinTOTAL System Files (Athena Only)
Document 4150
Revised 1/29/2007 LD1

WinTOTAL has a self-healing mechanism we call "SafeStart".  It usually runs after updates to install and register system files with Windows.  In rare cases where system files are damaged or overwritten by other programs, you may need to run SafeStart manually to get all of WinTOTAL's system files back in place.

Symptoms of needing to "replace" your system files are error messages that include a "Runtime" error or screens that are blank or don't come up.

You should only do this upon the recommendation of one of our technicians.

This is a somewhat lengthy process and not something you should normally have to do, but in cases where you're getting errors, reinstalling system files often gets you back up and running!  To run a SafeStart and check WinTOTAL system files, do the following:

  1. Restart your PC.  (This alone solves a lot of software issues!)
  2. Close all open programs and antivirus software. You will need to close all programs that run resident in the background as well.  Often, these programs running in the background are what kept SafeStart from functioning properly in the first place.

Note: To close all programs, press and hold Ctrl + Alt + Del on your keyboard.

    For Windows 98 or ME
In the window that appears, click to highlight an item, and click End Task to close it. You will repeat this process to close all listed programs individually. Do not close Explorer or Systray.

    For Windows XP
If prompted about what you want to do, click Task Manager. In the window that appears, click the Applications tab, click the click to highlight an item, and click End Task to close it. You will repeat this process to close all listed programs individually. Do not close Explorer or Systray.
  3. Click Start, Run.
  4. In the box that appears, type the following and click OK.

    C:\Win2000\WinTOTAL.exe replace

  5. WinTOTAL will now replace all of its major system files and fonts. When finished, a WinTOTAL SafeStart Log displays. Click OK to close it.

At this point, your program should work as expected.
