Exporting & Importing Sketches (Aurora and Athena)
Document 4050
Revised 5/16/2007 LD1

Apex v3 can be used outside of WinTOTAL and the resulting sketch can be exported as a JPG and imported through the WinTOTAL Photos PowerView.

Although a la mode no longer provides technical support for the usage of Apex, this process is useful in situations when a legacy sketcher will not send a sketch back to WinTOTAL.

For technical assistance with Apex, please contact them directly at 888-308-2722.

To manually import a sketch from a version of Apex that was installed with WinTOTAL

  1. Launch Apex outside of WinTOTAL.
  • In Athena: Browse to the WIN2000\ASKETCH\APEXWIN3 folder through My Computer.  Then double click APEXWIN3.EXE.
  • In Aurora:  Click Start, then Run, then type %wt%\ASketch\apexwin3 and press Enter.  This will take you to the Apex directory under the Aurora program directory.  Then, double click APEXWIN3.EXE.
  1. After drawing and saving your sketch in Apex, press Ctrl + F12 to initiate their file export.
  2. Enter a file name.  Then be sure to choose JPG from the "Files of type" drop-down.  By default, it will be in a Data folder under the Apex program directory.  Even though you can change the directory, Apex will always store it there.
  3. After the file has been exported, you can close Apex.
  4. Then, in WinTOTAL, go to Athena's Photos PowerView or Aurora's Images PowerView.
  5. If you don't already have a digital sketch page added under Photo pages in report, click Add Photo Page.
  6. In the Contents screen, scroll down to the Sketch section, expand it if necessary, and double-click one of the [Digital] sketch pages to add it into your report.  Then, click OK to close the Contents window.
  7. Scroll down to the sketch page you just added under Photo pages in report and click it once so it appears highlighted.
  8. Now, switch WinTOTAL into browsing for images.
  • In Athena, under photo sources, click the button labeled File.  This switches to a list of your images as they appear on your hard drive.
  • In Aurora, click the option at the lower left  that says Images on Disk.

Note: Remember that you switched your image view.  Next time, before retrieving photos from your database, you'll need to click the database option!

  1. Click Browse and navigate to the folder in which you saved the JPG Apex.  For Aurora, it will be in "C:\a la mode\wintotal\ASketch\ApexWin3\Data".  For Athena, it will be in "C:\WIN2000\ASKETCH\APEXWIN3\DATA" Then, click OK.  WinTOTAL will then show a list of files in that directory.  If your sketch has multiple pages, there will be a separate image for each page with the page number appended to the file name you gave the sketch.
  2. You should see your sketch image(s) there.  Now, just drag an image onto your photo form.  If your sketch had multiple pages, repeat the steps for adding sketch pages and integrating each image separately.

Since this process isn't a true integration, the calculations naturally won't export to the form.  All you will see is an image of the sketch attached to the WinTOTAL report like any other photo would be.  However, if a sketch isn't integrating the regular way, this process at least gets an image into your report.
